The best thing about traits isn't the starting levels, but the permanent xp gains. It's nice to get ones that boost xp gains in skills that are hard to upgrade, or important to level early. Fast learner is nice for this as well. Strength is extremely important for combat and extra looting, so I try to take Strong or Stout.
Best Positive Trait is definitely strong that takes up 10+ points. Best Negative Trait to take to get free points is Very underweight and Thirsty, because food and water is abundant all over the game's map. Short Sighted only affects foraging radius and makes no difference to actual perception sight. High Thirst is easily fixed with a bottle of water.
